Plant-based Burger Brawl

Okay, full disclosure here: I am passionate about exploring plant-based food options (which has nothing to do with the fact that I now live with a plant-based chef!) I recently attended a fantastic food event in Orlando, Florida, hosted by The Sanctum Cafe and Proper & Wild.

Chef Eddie Matta of Proper & Wild competed with Chef Kelsey Moreau of The Sanctum Café to take home the gold (literally) - the coveted Golden Spatula in this Veggie Burger Brawl! Each one created a delicious interpretation of the "best damn burger."

Kelsey (representing The Sanctum): It’s called "The Apple Jack" because it has apple chutney and pepper jack cheese. On top of the patty was a fried onion ring with the pepper jack cheese, then drizzled with BBQ sauce. What was especially cool about Kelsie's burger was that she made her pink buns from scratch, and it was topped with a spicy sweet pickle. Her side dish: Buttermilk Brussel Slaw.

According to Eddie (representing Proper and Wild), "On the bottom there's a cashew cheese, then you got the seitan bacon, which is made of mushrooms and chickpeas. The burger has 21 ingredients, but I'll spare you the details because it's a lot. On top of the burger there’s a cucumber fennel slaw. Lastly, you got the golden beet ketchup to go with the golden spatula!" 😎

His side dish: Chili Cheese Chickpea Fries

Live music from Weldon St. Jazz band, door prizes, great food, and yummy drinks featuring Tank Brewing Co.

AND THE 2019 WINNER OF THE GOLDEN SPATULA IS:

Chef EDDIE MATTA of Proper & Wild!

A quick history lesson: The burger began at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, where vendors grilled up ground beef patties, slapped them onto buns, and fed them to hordes of hungry Americans. The tradition been going strong for more than 100 years and today, it comes in plant-based versions, too!
